Huawei Keynotes and Showcases OPNFV Mobile Networking Innovations at Inaugural OPNFV Summit

[San Francisco, USA, Nov. 11, 2015] Huawei will be keynoting and showcasing its innovative products and solutions at the first OPNFV (Open Platform for Network Function Virtualization) Summit, held during November 11-12 in San Francisco, Calif. As a Gold Sponsor of the OPNFV Summit, Huawei will highlight its next-generation Central Office and Mobile Network innovations on the OPNFV Platform.

At the first day of the summit, Pang Kang, Chief Technology Officer at Huawei wireless product line, will deliver a keynote speech about the next generation mobile architecture built on OPNFV and how it meets the needs of operators as they roll out new networks. Huawei will also lead several panel sessions regarding OPNFV service function chaining, upgrade scenarios in an OPNFV based Telco environment, OPNFV Mobile Networking and additional, related OPNFV topics.

“The OPNFV platform will be a significant step in the move to a new mobile architecture that scales, is elastic, resilient and agile,” said Pang Kang. “A carrier grade virtual infrastructure platform will help Huawei deliver the next-generation in mobile networking to our customers.” Open source software will play an important role in the next generation mobile network. It will be highly scalable, elastic and extremely robust in order to handle the exponential increase in traffic of video, IoT and increasing smarter devices. OPNFV will be the reference platform for operators to enable rapid deployment of new services, automated provisioning, security and a DevOps workflow for upgrades and maintenance, and for compliance of business-level policies.

“Being a platinum founding member of OPNFV and key contributor to OPNFV’s Arno and Brahmaputra releases has enabled Huawei to develop a deep understanding and expertise regarding open source and NFV applicability and scalability,” said Miguel Dajer, VP, Wireless R&D at Huawei. “We are showcasing some of our expertise here at the OPNFV Summit with several demonstrations and have many additional OPNFV and related projects underway. Huawei is excited to continue its investment and commitment to the OPNFV community and to the delivery of open source solutions to its customers.”

Huawei is contributing to many projects in OPNFV including:

• Compass - a DevOps and OPNFV Installer Project

• ONOS Framework – a secure ONOS based controller for mobile networks

• Pinpoint-a Big Data solution for Failure Prediction

• Bottleneck – an end-to-end performance tracing tool

• VNF Forwarding Graph- a policy based service function chaining system

• Multi-site Virtualized Infrastructure – a distributed architecture for OPNFV

• Movie – a Model Oriented Virtualization Interface

These projects will initially look to build NFV infrastructure and virtualized infrastructure management solutions, leveraging “upstream” open-source components like OpenStack and OpenDaylight.

During the OPNFV Summit, Huawei will demonstrate three OPNFV-based solutions that are targeted for commercial deployment:

- VNFs over OPNFV. Huawei’s vEPC and vIMS components successfully run over the OPNFV platform with Huawei’s MANO component. Huawei’s VNF and MANO components support open source platforms, in addition to Huawei’s FusionSphere platform, which will give customers more chances for different alternatives.

- VTN of ONOS for OPNFV. ONOS is the carrier grade open source SDN controller. As one of the leading companies of ONOS project, Huawei is driving ONOS as one of the important options for such carrier grade OPNFV platforms.

- Compass for OPNFV. Compass is a Huawei leading open source installer and DevOps tool for OPNFV with advanced software architecture, friendly GUI and rich features, which is one of the best OPNFV deployment tools to help Huawei customers reduce OPEX.

OPNFV, a Linux Foundation Collaborative project, was formally established on September 30, 2014 with the goal of becoming a carrier grade, integrated, open source reference platform for NFV (Network Function Virtualization). OPNFV membership includes nineteen platinum and forty three silver members including service providers and vendors in the IT and ICT markets. Huawei is an OPNFV founding Platinum member and also a member of the Board of Directors and Technical Steering Committee (TSC). Developers from these member companies contribute to the integration, enhancements, requirements, testing and documentation of OPNFV to ensure that the platform meets industry needs.

Huawei is an active player in many open source communities. In addition to being the founding platinum member of OPNFV, Huawei is also the platinum member of Linux Foundation, gold member of OpenStack and CloudFoundry, silver member of OpenDaylight, and a founding member of ONOS.
